No fewer than 10 people have died, while 7, 342 others were reported displaced by flooding in Plateau between May and July this year.

This was disclosed in Jos by the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Agency (SEMA), Hassan Barde, on Friday.

According to him, 832 villages were submerged while 1,153 houses were destroyed by flood during the period.

He named Jos North, Jos South, Bokkos, Kanke, Wase, Shendam, Mikang, Jos East, Langtang North and Langtang South as the worst hit areas.

Barde said, however, that the figures were not static because the rains were not yet over.

He added that the value of the damage was estimated at N5.2 million.

Barde said that the agency was doing everything necessary to alleviate the suffering of the people affected by the floods.

“Since May, we have recorded 10 deaths caused by flood, with 1,153 houses destroyed and 7, 342 people displaced from their homes.

“All the 17 Local Governments have been affected by flood with 832 villages totally submerged.

“SEMA has already put in place arrangements to carry out what is called Rapid Post Disaster Need Assessment.

“Very soon we will be going out to the Local Governments affected.

“We will want to see the people displaced, where they are and what they need, to be able to come back and immediately make appropriation to the State Government for intervention.

“SEMA is collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure that citizens follow rules of erecting buildings and sanctioning those who deliberately build their homes on waterways”‎, he stated.

Barde said that his office had already reported the disaster to the National Emergency Management Agency for possible assistance.

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, and former Minister of Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has revealed those responsible for late Head of State, General Sani Abacha’s failure to release late MKO Abiola from prison.

In an interview with Sun, Babatope, who served as a minister in the Abacha’s authoritarian government, said some Yoruba leaders told Abiola not to accept freedom.

According to Babatope, him and other Southwestern cabinet members had pleaded with Abacha and all arrangements were made to get Abiola out of prison but the NADECO leader told him not to accept the release offer.

He said, “I have no regret serving Abacha, neither do I have apology to offer anybody. Nigerians have been very unfair to Abacha.

“Abacha was ready to release Abiola, but it was these NADECO leaders that told Abiola not to accept the release offer.

“Those of us that were ministers from the South West including myself, Mrs Mobolaji Osomo, late Dr Olu Onagoruwa and Elder Wole Oyelese, went to plead with Abacha to release Abiola.

“Even around that time, former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings was in Nigeria and he also pleaded for Abiola’s release.

“Abacha agreed and everything was being done to facilitate Abiola’s early release. The then Chief of General Staff, Lt-General Oladipo Diya even sent an executive jet to Benin to go and bring the judge, who was to handle the matter.

“But what eventually happened, NADECO leaders told Abiola not to accept the bail offered him.

“So, Abacha had no blame over the continued incarceration of Abiola, it was NADECO leaders that should be held responsible.”

The former vice president noted that any party that stifles the freedom of its members cannot provide freedom for the country.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, has described his party as undemocratic in the way its leaders carry out their activities.

We learnt that Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, lamented the alleged refusal of the party to organise statutory meetings for the organs of the party.

The Sun reports the former vice president, who spoke at the second Inter Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC) annual conference 2017 on internal democracy, complained about the alleged lack of internal democracy in the APC and other parties.

Atiku said:“The issue of internal democracy in our political parties has been with us for a long time, indeed since the restoration of civilian rule in 1999.

“In long-established democracies those statements would seem trite. But I recognise that our democracy is young, and our parties are also rather young.

“As a result, they are still wrestling with issues of party building, party structures, internal democracy and the nature of the relationship between parties and members, parties and legislatures and parties and government as well as among parties themselves.

“We had a very long period of authoritarian rule in Nigeria, ending in 1999. The legacy of that period is still with us as can be seen in our various governance institutions.

“Indeed even elements of that authoritarian past still wield power and influence in our country as we try to transition from that legacy.

“Also the structure of our economy is such that the state remains the most important source of economic opportunity.

“This heightens the struggle for state power and helps to shape the relationship between parties and members, among parties and among the various arms of government.

“It is, therefore, a huge challenge to democratize governance and the political parties in our country.

“But, as the theme of this conference makes clear, internal democracy in our political parties is very important for the parties, their members and for the country.

“The absence of internal democracy in our parties is a major reason our democracy remains fragile and why the quality of leadership that we produce has not matched our expectations and the challenges facing us as a nation.

“It is also one of the reasons it has been very difficult to hold leaders to account. Internal party democracy is important enough that it was one of the areas addressed by the Electoral Reform Committee headed by Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais many years ago.

“But we know that power wielders hardly voluntarily enlarge the democratic space. That is why I’ve often opined that internal party democracy will only come with genuine electoral reforms in the country.

“Such reforms, broadly along the Justice Uwais Committee Recommendations, which will further strengthen the independence of INEC and ensure that votes count, will encourage parties to field popular candidates in elections.

“And that in turn will encourage parties to allow internal democracy so members have the freedom to choose and express their opinions. Thus the role of godfathers and executive intrusion in the affairs of parties and elections will be diminished.

“In my view, there is a close relationship between democracy within political parties and democracy within the nation. Put simply you cannot give what you don’t have.

“You cannot build democracy on a substructure of dictatorship and intolerance.

“A political party that constricts the freedom of its members cannot really offer freedom to the citizens of the nation. Democracy is not just an idea; is a cultural practice.

“For a number of years now we have had political parties, even governing ones, which hardly hold meetings of their important organs, including those meant for the democratic selection of their leadership, or even constitute institutions prescribed in their constitution.”

Atiku said that was not party building but party bullying.

“And it’s certainly not a way to democratise parties and aggregate their members’ opinions, interests and aspirations.

“This means that efforts to deepen Nigeria’s democracy must include efforts at democratising our political parties.

“The institutionalisation of democracy in our internal party processes will help us deepen democracy in Nigeria.

“Leaders are more likely to tolerate opposition from citizens and other parties if they tolerate it within their own party.

“The lack of internal democracy in political parties is one of the reasons for the fraught relationships among parties and their elected representatives and the legislature and the executive.

“The loyalty of some in the legislature and executive lies not with the party but with a godfather who sponsored them, and the godfather may even be in a rival political party.

“Such anomalies will reduce if internal democracy flourishes in our political parties, and by extension the wider society.

“The selection of leaders in a democracy is a serious business because so many other things ride on it. Whenever we get it wrong the nation or a part thereof suffers.

“We must strive to get it right most of the time. And it is the voters who should freely make that determination. I therefore thank the IPAC for organising this conference and for inviting me to chair it.”

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has described former President, Olusegun Obasanjo as an “opportunist” who prefers to put a “weakling in position”.

Fayose made the claim while wondering why Obasanjo made the late Yar’Adua president despite been sick.

Speaking with Punch, the Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors Forum said he is a “living witness” of the life of Obasanjo.

Fayose noted that he wa only saying things he knew about the former president and not that he was attacking him.

According to Fayose, “I worked with him and know that Obasanjo is a sadist, an opportunist – a man who would rather put a weakling in position (of power). How would he ask Yar’Adua that he knew was sick to be president?

“I wonder why some media (organisations) celebrate Obasanjo. Obasanjo has no character. Obasanjo was the first president that trampled on our constitution in all ways using brute force.”

Fayose also claimed that Obasanjo does not have a stake “in terms of human beings” in party politics in the south-west.

He said, “When you say human support, Obasanjo does not enjoy such in the south-west.

“Obasanjo is only left with the clout of being a former president.

“At the time I was the governor, I was a young man. I was avoiding Obasanjo because he was from the same zone as me. One thing I have known is that Obasanjo will run away if you can stand up against him. Obasanjo is a weak man; the moment you can stand up against him, he will chicken out.

“Look at Orji Uzor Kalu and late governor of Niger State. At that time, I couldn’t stand up (against Obasanjo). I have now found out that, sometimes, it is good to confront monsters. We are guided by the constitution and respect for the rule of law. Obasanjo messed up by disobeying the rule of law and removing governors at will.

“Elders are only meaningful when they are using their grey hair to lead the people well. You only respect grey hair when the man is upright. Obasanjo is not a man to be respected; he is an opportunist.”

Fayose, had earlier declared his interest to visit president Muhammadu Buhari in London as a way to confirm that the president is actually recovering from his undisclosed illness.

The road has ended for 27-year-old Mohammed Umar and members of his gang, who abducted and killed a 35-year-old female lecturer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, Christiana Onyenowo Agbulu, who was in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, to visit a friend. The gang was also alleged to be responsible for the death of 24-year-old Grace Onaivi, a 300 Level student of International Relations at Kogi State University, Ayingba, who was kidnapped by it.

After alighting at Ganaja junction in Lokoja, Christiana was said to have hired a commercial motorcyclist, to take her to a place close to a first generation bank, where her boyfriend, Shember Aondogu Levi, was waiting to receive her. As she did not know the place, she handed over her mobile phone to the commercial motorcyclist to get instructions from the Levi as to how to get to his location.

Unknown to her, the commercial motorcyclist, whose name turned out to be Musa Nuhu, also known by the sobriquet, Black, was a member of a kidnap gang operating in the state. Along the way, he veered off the direction given to him by Levi and rather headed into Powerline road off the Okene-Abuja Expressway. From there he took Christiana to the gang’s hideout in Sango Daji area of Lokoja, Kogi State., where she was blindfolded with her legs and hands bound. The members of the gang raped her and also took her ATM cards and forced her to divulge the password. They then proceeded to withdraw N80,000 from her account. Not satisfied with that amount, they demanded N150,000 ransom from her family.

Sunday Sunfurther learnt from the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu that the abduction happened on November 26, 2016. Inalegwu explained that Levi became alarmed when he could no longer reach Christiana and the motorcyclist on the phone after repeated attempted to put through a call. He rushed to a police station to file a report that she may have been kidnapped.

Recounting the experience, Levi toldSunday Sun: “First, let me state Christiana and myself were mates in the university. She was my girlfriend. Four years after we graduated, we lost contact. But we reconnected through the internet and discovered that we were both still single. We decided to marry on November 26, 2017. She was coming from Makurdi to Lokoja and I told her to drop at Ganaja junction. I started directing the commercial motorcyclist on how to bring her to where I was waiting for her at First Bank. Then I lost communication with her and the motorcyclist. I became alarmed and quickly went to report to the SARS office after waiting for while.”

Acting on the information, Inalegwu said that the commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Supol Bimbo Oyewole and his operatives swung into action. They contacted her bank and learnt that abductors had already made withdrawals from her account through two banks – UBA and Stanbic-IBTC. Fortunately the cameras of the ATMs captured good images of the gang members that made the withdrawals.

Armed with the pictures of the alleged suspects, SARS detectives launched a manhunt for them and on December 30, 2016, SARS operatives arrested some of the suspects at Obokolo waterside and Natako area of Lokoja.

Supol Oyewole listed the names of those arrested as: Sanusi Jubril, 33; Caleb Moses, 28; Nuhu Musa a.k.a Black Mudi Sali, 33 . He added that all three are indigenes of Igala in Ankpa Local Government, Kogi state and Serikinuma.

In the course of interrogation they revealed details of the crime and on January 3, 2017, Nuhu Musa took the SARS Commander, and members of his team to the hideout of the gang in a bush in the Sango Daji area, where they saw the badly decomposed body  Christiana.

Inalegwu added that the members of the gang confessed their involvement in the abduction of 24-year-old Grace Onaivi in December 2016. Similar manner, she had hired a motorcyclist in the Natako area to take her to her house. Instead the motorcyclist took her to the gang’s hideout at Barrack area, not far from Sango Daji. The gang tied her hands and legs and raped her to death. They took her ATM car and withdrew money from her account. The body of the victim was later discovered in the gangs’ hideout.

When he was arrested, Mohammed Umar told detectives how the two deceased victims spent six weeks in their custody. He also revealed that some abducted victims escaped from the their hideout. The SARS commander said that the police invited some  of the victims mentioned by Umar. And when he was taken to the homes of some of the victims, they positively identified him as a member of the gang that kidnapped them.

Umar known by the name, Kogi, revealed that the gang killed Christiana when the ransom it wanted was not forthcoming. He added: “We go after women only. Some of our gang members use commercial motorcycles at Natako area, Lokoja, to carry any female passenger. Then we immediately take the lady to our hideout at Sango Daji area Lokoja. When we kidnapped the lecturer, stripped her naked and five of us raped her. We tied her two legs and two hands. We took her ATM card and withdrew N80, 000 naira. We called her relatives and demanded a ransom of N150, 000 naira. It was when the money was not forthcoming that we killed her. We kidnapped the student when she took a bike from Natako area and gang member who is an Okada rider took her to one of our hideouts at Barrack area not far from Sango. We tied her legs and hands. We raped her and took her ATM card, and used it to withdraw some money from her bank and also collected N50,000 cash from her.

“About 10 victims escaped from us. One of them, name withheld, was a youth corps member who came from Bayelsa to Ajaokuta. She boarded a motorcycle to Ganaja junction. Immediately we took her to our hideout, seized her ATM card and withdraw some money. We also got N150,000 ransom from the parents. She later escaped from us.”

Giving more details of the gangs activities, Umar said: “We kidnapped Blessing (other names concealed), when she hired a commercial motorcycle from Nataco junction. Immediately I called my gang members and we took her to the bush. She started shouting but we overpowered her and took her ATM card to withdraw money. By the time we came back from the bank, the rope had loosened and she escaped.”

Umar was arrested by the police during another robbery operation along Osare/Lokoja expressway. Inalegwu said that the suspects would be charged to court soon.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the Acting-President, Yemi Osinbajo, is unable to carry out all the functions of the President in spite of fulfilling the conditions of section 145 of the 1999 Constitution which bestows on him the full powers of the President.

It could be recalled that Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, had told Nigerians that his principal left the country on May 7th, 2017 to undergo further medical check-up in London, UK, and subsequently transmitted letters to both chambers of the National Assembly for Osinbajo to act as president pending his return.

However, in a terse statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye, the PDP claimed that the absence of the President was hampering governance as the Acting-President was unable to fully perform the role of the President.

It further demands that the true state of President Buhari’s health challenges be publicly made known in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy and posterity, noting that it’s been over 90 days since he President left the country.

The statement reads: “Today, August 5, 2017 is exactly 90 days since President Muhammadu Buhari left Nigeria to the U.K on medical vacation. President Muhammadu Buhari left on the 17 May, 2017

“His protracted medical vacation is hampering governance as Acting-President, Yemi Osinbajo, has not been able to carry out all the functions of the President

“For the sake of Nigeria’s democracy and posterity, we again demand to know the true state of President Buhari’s health challenges

“Nigeria belongs to all of us and we must work together to protect this country and our hard earned democracy.”

Malaysia Police on Sunday, August 6, picked up a total of 409 foreigners including Nigerians and busted a passport-forging syndicate masterminded by a Pakistani man in the first large-scale joint operation led by Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division.
About 200 law enforcement officers hit the streets to nab foreigners linked to international terror groups, those without valid documents and those suspected of illegal activities.
Public buses were also stopped for checks and in one instance, a Nigerian man ran so fast to escape that bystanders commented that he was faster than Usain Bolt. However, Police personnel managed to catch him, although it took five of them to overpower him. (As seen in the picture and video)
Counter Terrorism Division head, Deputy Commissioner Datuk Ayob Khan, later confirmed that the operation was held as part of preparations for the 2017 SEA Games, which starts on Aug 19.
Concentrating on the city centre around Jalan Masjid India, security personnel in full tactical gear were not only armed but also equipped with radionuclide identification devices (RID) to detect radioactive material.
Counter Terrorism Division officers, along with their comrades from other units such as the Special Action Unit, General Operations Force Tiger Platoon and Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, took part.
Other agencies involved were the Immigration Department, Atomic Energy Licensing Board, National Registration Department and Interpol.
In a raid on the Menara City One condominium in Jalan Munshi Abdullah, multiple enforcement teams made their way from the top and lowest floors simultaneously, with armed officers at stairwells to block escape routes.
Most residents cooperated when the authorities came knocking, with documents in hand for verification. Those who ignored the knocks soon had their doors and locks broken. Some units where the occupants refused to cooperate were found to be full of foreigners with incomplete papers or none at all.
Police also detected fake passport-makers and seized some RM54,000 (S$17,154) along with 70 passports, including 67 Indian passports, and a machine used to forge immigration stickers.
Resident Annuar Amin, 43, said he was shocked to see dozens of suspects tied up at the apartment courtyard as they awaited processing.
"I was about to go back upstairs, but I saw people being rounded up," he said. "Then I heard loud noises, so I decided to just wait below until everything was over."
Deputy Commissioner Ayob said the 409 foreigners detained were brought back to the police headquarters for further screening.

The other members of the gang, who were armed with a jack and iron rod which they took from the same boot began hitting me all over and I collapsed on the ground. They robbed me of sum of N557,500, 000. Later they dropped me close to my residence, unnoticed and escaped. When Im regained some strength, I went to Nsukka Police Division and reported the case,” he said.

A Ghanaian journalist, Saddick Adams on Saturday posted photos from a funeral where the deceased was buried in a coffin molded like the popular beer brand, Star.
"At a funeral today in our own Ghana, the deceased was buried in a casket that was molded like a Star Beer bottle" he wrote.
According to Ghanaian media, burying the dead in specially shaped coffins is not new in the country.
"In some localities in Ghana, the coffins are often shaped to fit the occupation of the deceased." reports Daily Graphic. "For instance a fisherman may be buried in a coffin shaped like a fish."
I guess it is safe to say that this particular deceased either guess the deceased was either a beer bar operator or died after drinking too much star beer...
