Americans’ debt level notched another record-high in the second-quarter on the back of modest rises in mortgage, auto and credit-card-debt where delinquencies jumped.

The media reported on Wednesday that total U.S. household debt was 12.84 trillion dollars in the three months to June, up 552 billion dollars from a year ago, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of New York report published on Tuesday.

The proportion of overall debt that was delinquent, at 4.8 per cent was on par with the previous quarter.

However, a red flag was raised over the transitions of credit card balances into delinquency which the New York Fed said “ticked up notably.”

Loosening lending standards have allowed borrowers with lower credit scores to access credit cards, Andrew Haughwout, an in-house economist, said in the report.

“The current state of credit card delinquency flows can be an early indicator of future trends and we will closely monitor the degree to which this uptick is predictive of further consumer distress,” he said.

Total US indebtedness is about 14 per cent above the trough of household deleveraging brought on by the 2007-2009 financial crises and deep recession, a pull-back that interrupted what had been a 63-year upward trend.

Mortgage debt was 8.69 trillion dollars in the second quarter, up 329 billion dollars from last year, the report said.

Student loan debt was 1.34 trillion dollars, up 85 billion dollars, while auto loan debt came in at 1.19 trillion dollars, up 55billion dollars. (Reuters/NAN)

Emeka Ojukwu, first son of the late Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, has confirmed that his father met President Muhammadu Buhari in 2003.

Ojukwu said this in reaction to reports which quoted him as saying Buhari’s claims of meeting his father was false.

Buhari in a national broadcast on Monday stated that he and Ojuwku agreed that Nigeria must remain one.

Shortly after the broadcast, there were different reports on social media, with some accusing the president of fabricating that part of his speech.

But while dismissing those reports, Ojukwu’s son said if he wanted to comment on a matter, there would be no ambiguity in it.

“It has been brought to my attention that there is an article making the rounds on social media attributed to me refuting the remarks of Mr President concerning his relationship and discussions with my late father,” the statement read.

“Let me lend my voice to those of the rest of my fellow countrymen and welcome Mr President back home.

“Let me state the following categorically; firstly, that I made no such comments to anybody, and secondly that I am aware that his excellency’s comments were indeed factual.

“I have noticed a disturbing trend recently of fake news being attributed to me on social media. I don’t know who is behind it or what their motivation might be, but let me assure you that any time I feel the need to comment publicly on any matter, I will not do so via some anonymous email or anything of the like, rather be rest assured that there will be no ambiguity whatsoever as to whether the comments came from me.”

When my partner kept going on and on about wanting a threesome I finally gave in, but now it’s left me feeling dirty. I loved that man. I gave up everything to be with him — my home, my family and my marriage.

I met him two years ago when he came to fit a new sink in our kitchen. He said he could do other work round the house so he came back several times to do small jobs. He was very flirty and one afternoon we had s*x.

It made me feel wanted and we started a passionate affair. Before long he asked me to leave my husband, promising he would treat me right. I am 28 now, he is 34.

I thought I had found happiness at last. My husband was controlling and men have never treated me well.

A family friend sexually abused me when I was a child. I never told anyone because everybody liked him and I thought nobody would believe me.

Then all my boyfriends cheated on me. Even my husband was a player. Things were great with my new partner at first but then he started asking me to have a threesome. I told him no but he said that I would do it if I loved him.

He never stopped going on about it and I eventually agreed.

He fixed it up and he gave me a drink and diazepam beforehand, to relax me. The other man was a mate of his. It was horrible and I was in bits afterwards. He changed towards me after that. He started coming home late and treating me like rubbish. One night I looked on his phone while he was asleep and found that he was cheating on me with another woman.

I confronted him and he said I was crazy and walked out, saying he did not want to be with me now. He took everything from me and left me like I was nothing, but I just cannot seem to move on.

Barcelona is close to signing Angel Di Maria from PSG for €50 million.

Spanish newspaper Sport says that the deal to bring in the former Real Madrid star to the Camp Nou is almost done.

Barcelona is yet to find Neymar’s replacement after the Brazilian left on a world record deal to PSG.

Lionel Messi has just one year remaining on his contract and is yet to sign a new deal with reports suggesting he may want to seek exit from the club.

Buying Di Maria could help convince the Argentina captain to finally put pen to paper on an extension.

PSG is in need of funds from sales to balance the books for Financial Fair Play after parting with €222 million to bring Neymar to the French capital.

Indonesia-based Osaze Odemwingie has not ruled out a return to European football when the Asian country’s Premier League season ends in November.

The 36-year-old, who has been in fine form since joining Madura United in April, is also eyeing a return to the Super Eagles, after being in football’s international wilderness for three years.

“I’m still in the game. In November, the season ends in Indonesia.  I hope to return to Europe and finish the game, and then get a little chance to enter the national team,”Osaze said in an interview with Sport.ru.

Osaze last played for the Eagles at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he scored the winner against Bosnia. Now, he’s hoping to play in his third World Cup in Russia next year.

Top Eagles stars Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo, Brown Ideye, Obafemi Martins, Anthony Ujah and several others play in the lucrative Chinese league, and the ex-West Brom ace is hoping Gernot Rohr takes a look at his goal scoring heroics in Indonesia.

“I do not really believe it, but it is possible. Currently the majority of prospective players in the Nigerian national team play in Asia, in China. Maybe I (need to) pay attention to the coach. I will try.”

The former Lokomotiv Moscow man says he has also not ruled out a return to Russia and could join ex-Tottenham Hotspur star Roman Pavlyuchenko at Ararat Moscow, a team that represent the Armenian diaspora in Russia.

“I will also consider this option. I want to play in Moscow, where my mother lives. But there is no offer for this option yet. In principle, my door is not closed to any country, especially to (clubs in) Russia,” he added.

On his experience playing in Indonesia, Osaze added, “When I drive here, I do not know what’s going to happen, but generally I’m happy with everything. Of course, in terms of infrastructure, there’s much to do, though I am not complaining.

“Every day we went through it with excitement (at Madura), we played well and I scored in almost every game and this feeling is the most important for me because I will miss it after my career.”

The Ballon d'Or holder cut into the area from the left before curling the ball into the top corner in a 2-1 friendly win at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Ronaldo, 32, is still suspended for three more competitive games after being sent off and shoving the referee in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Barcelona earlier this month.

"That's what this man is capable of, we're happy to have him here," Zidane told Real Madrid TV.

"We put in a disciplined display and made a good start. I'm happy because the fans came out in their numbers and that was very important for us.

"We achieved what we wanted to, the trophy remains here and we all head home happy."

The Spanish champions next face Valencia in La Liga on Sunday, having opened their campaign by winning the UEFA Super Cup, Supercopa de Espana and their first league outing.

'Zizou' added: "We got what we were hoping for, gave those players who hadn't had much of a chance some minutes and that's what these games are for.

"[Dani] Ceballos, Marcos [Llorente], Borja [Mayoral], Cristiano all got some game time.

"Now we have to rest up and tomorrow we'll start thinking about our LaLiga game against Valencia [on Sunday], which is coming around quickly."

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has said he will not be running for Nigeria’s presidency in 2019 general elections or in the near future.

According to Bloomberg Markets Magazine, Dangote declared that he ws not cut out for politics, stressing that he was more comfortable with business.

He, however, said there was need for cooperation with politicians.

He told the magazine: “No, I’m not interested in active politics. There’s quite a lot we can do from the business side. I enjoy a lot of what I am doing and I also love my freedom and I don’t have too much.

“The little (freedom) I have, politics would take away. I am not ready to give that up. There are businessmen who are interested in politics. I’m not one of them.

“Well, in Africa, yes, I do think you need politicians. But at the same time, we cannot get things right unless there is good cooperation between politicians and businessmen. It’s a win-win. When you look at it today, in Nigeria, over 85 per cent of the GDP is from the private sector.”

On whether he is under pressure to make political donations, he said: “Well, you know the political donation depends on who you are dealing with and who you are donating money to. But the issue is we don’t go and give people in politics money for favours.

“I’ve told presidents of countries, ‘I’m a contractor, I’m running a business, I don’t need any favours.’

“And really, when you look at it today, in all our businesses, we don’t need any favour. We’ve done our numbers. We think this business will work and we don’t need government support.”

Senator representing Ebonyi North, Sam Egwu, on Friday urged the Federal Government to find a way of resolving the current industrial action embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The former Ebonyi State Governor made the appeal while addressing journalists at Umuebe, in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
Egwu noted that incessant strikes by lecturers were undermining the credibility of graduates produced by universities in the country.
Urging both ASUU and government to find a lasting solution to the impasse, the onetime Minister of Education said both students and parents were seriously affected.
The lawmaker stated that in spite of the current recession, the federal government should show considerable commitment toward implementing the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding entered with ASUU.
He said, “The spate of strike actions in the nation’s institutions of higher learning is disturbing.
“A common ground should be explored by both FG and ASUU with a view to resolving all contending issues leading to strike.
“The 2009 ASUU/FG agreement was signed under my tenure as the minister of education.
“We signed the agreement because we believed its implementation will help improve the standard and quality of university education in the country.
“What I am saying is that the present administration should show considerable goodwill in commencing the implementation of the agreement.
“The country is facing some difficult economic challenges in view of the current recession.
“However, it should equally consider the conditions of the lecturers, fate of the Nigerian universities and the students.
“Let the government start from somewhere; it may not implement 100 per cent of the agreement at once, but it must show considerable commitment.
“ASUU on its part should show patriotism and stop adopting strike action as the last option for pushing forward its demand.
“The two parties must reach a compromise anchored on constructive dialogue and engagement to steer through and permanently end the incessant universities strike in Nigeria.’’

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the cut-off marks for Nigerian tertiary institutions while also lifting the ban for post UTME examination.

Premium Times reports that these decisions were taken at the 2017 Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday, August 22.

Minimum cut-off marks for tertiary institutions are:

Universities were pegged at 120

Polytechnics and colleges of education were pegged at 100

Innovative enterprising institutes was pegged at 110

Institutions were however allowed to raise their cut-off marks above JAMB’s stipulation.

It was also agreed that admissions into public degree awarding institutions for the 2017 UTME examination will end on January 15, 2018 while private institutions will end theirs on January 31, 2018.

It was also revealed that decisions on first choice candidates by universities will be expected to be complete October 15 and second choice candidates will end on December 15.

The rest of the students seeking admission will be available for other institutions till the January closing dates.

Ishaq Oloyede who is the registrar of JAMB said a Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) will be used to streamline admission processes among institutions based on challenges associated with the former approach.

He said: “All over the world, there is agitation for dynamic educational policy,” he said. “JAMB only admits for National Diploma, not Higher National Diploma; so why should we use the same requirement for ND and BSC, that is unreasonable parity.”

“We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut off mark.”

He noted that the number of those seeking admission to study agriculture had dropped while those for medicine and health science rose.

He also spoke about illegal admissions saying the new process allows the registrar to approve all candidates.

“About 17,160 students were admitted without JAMB across institutions in Nigeria.”

Recall that Gurusbest previously reported that the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (post-UTME) conducted for candidates seeking admission into higher institution was scrapped by the Federal Government.

The Federal Government explained that all tertiary institutions were at liberty to conduct screening for candidates seeking admission into any school.

CALABAR—TWO persons, suspected to have smuggled 145 poisonous snakes and other tropical rainforest reptiles from Cameroon to Nigeria, have disappeared from the custody of the Nigerian Agricultural and Quarantine Agency in Calabar, the office they were handed over to by the Nigerian Customs Service along with their consignment.

Mr. Ibrahim Jubril, the Minister of State for Environment, who visited the office weekend, to handover the reptiles to the University of Uyo for research, was told by Sunday Uket, the Director of the agency that “just two persons were brought here and we have no clue where they have disappeared to.”

The Minister, who said he was surprised and unhappy with the agency’s poor handling of the situation, noted that the smugglers would have been a veritable source of information on where they got the reptiles, where they were taking them to and for what purpose.

Speaking while handing over the reptiles to the University of Uyo represen-tatives, Mr. Jubril said the importers wanted to use Nigeria as transit point for smuggling the items to Rotterdam and Luxemburg.

Dr. Edem Eniang of the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management, a snake expert who took delivery of three boxes, said the snakes were professionally packaged for export and that the venom in African mambas is the best and the most sought after in Europe for the treatment of stroke and high blood pressure.

He added that the snakes will be separated and those still alive will be trained in a snake farm and then milked for their venom to be used for scientific research by the university.

Diego Costa has continued his long-standing feud with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, by reiterating his anger at the text message the Italian sent him, asking him to leave the club.

Costa was informed by Conte he was no longer part of his plans at Stamford Bridge via SMS earlier this summer.

And now the Spain striker has said the former Juventus boss sent the message in “a moment of madness”.

He told MC News: “Conte’s text? It was a moment of madness. It can happen, but I thought it was disrespectful.

“I always asked to speak face to face with the Coach and the board. I never sent [them] text messages, so it shows what kind of person he is.

“If something makes me sad about this situation, it’s [the fans’] affection as they’d always supported me, even during the delicate moments.

“If I’d been in the team for three years, it was for them and the dressing room, which was very much united. It was a great experience.”

Sickle cell children can live long unlike widespread but wrong belief that children with sickle cell disorder cannot live beyond  21 years.

A medical doctor, Mrs.Anuzie Odia, made the clarification while spreaking at a counselling programme organised by CrimsonBow Sickle Cell Initiative at Alimosho Local Government. She also advised parents of children with sickle cell disorder (SCD) not to lose hope on the survival of their children.

Dr Odia said, “I want you parents whose children have SCD to keep hope alive. Do not allow the challenge to discourage you. Do not form the wrong impression which is common in the society by thinking that children with sickle cell cannot live longer than 21 years”.

She said a lot of people have been spreading the wrong information and urged the parents to drop that idea. “There are many people born with SCD and many of them have lived long and attained greater heights in life. It all depends on giving children with SCD quality medical attention, balanced diet, adequate and prompt medical care,” Odia said.

The medical doctor mentioned important things which parents of children with SCD must do. These include consciously boosting immunity of children with SCD, giving the children adequate nutrition, adequate rest, giving them clean and safe drinking water regularly and constant medical check-up at least twice in a year.

She said parents who do these things constantly can be rest assured that their children will survive and live long despite Sickle Cell Disorder.

Dr Odia said sickle cell disorder is not a contagious disease unlike widespread but erroneous belief in the society. She also said that children should feel free to play with children with SCD as they cannot contact the disease by playing with children with SCD.

The Chief Executive officer of the NGO, Miss Timilehin Edwin told newsmen that more enlightenment programmes will be organised in other Local government areas in Lagos state.she expressed satisfaction with the turnout of parents and children with SCD.

The event afforded the parents an opportunity to get personal and free medical check-up and attention by DrOdia. Honourable Mrs Shade Shinkaye a former commissioner for women affairs in Kogi state and one of the promoters of the NGO said the programme which is meant to support the children deserves the support of government and prominent citizens.

The federal government has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its on-going strike in the universities in the interest of the nation.

This is coming just as a meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU ) as part of move to end the strike action embarked by the Union ended in a deadlock.

A statement by the director of press at the ministry of Labour, Samuel Olowokere however said negotiations are expected to continue on Thursday.

The meeting held at the minister’s Conference Room at the ministry of Labour and Employment however took significant steps towards the resolution of the issues raised by ASUU.

Particularly, the meeting agreed on the forensic audit of the sum of N30 billion earlier given to ASUU in 2010 and further agreed  on monthly remittances to ASUU, while  the audit lasts.

Earlier, Ngige had appealed to the Union to end the industrial action.

In a statement signed by the deputy director of Press in the ministry, Olowookere, the minister said there was an on-going renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the federal government and ASUU by the Babalakin Committee which the federal government set up on Monday 13th February 2017.

According to the statement, though the federal government did not wish to apportion blame, “it is important to note that ASUU did not follow due process in the declaration of the industrial action as it did not give the Federal Government, the mandatory 15 days’ notice as contained in the Section 41 of Trade Disputes Act, Cap T8, 2004.

“In fact, it was on Monday 14th August, 2017 that the Office of the Minister received a letter dated 13th August, 2017 from ASUU, that is, one full day after it commenced the strike”, the minister added.

It further noted that the letter was to inform the federal government that ASUU has started strike and not a declaration of intention to go on strike as contained in the Trade Dispute Act, 2004.

The minister further said that since the case was being conciliated, it was against the spirit of Social Dialogue and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for ASUU to embark on strike as enunciated in the ILO Convention.

Ngige said, “The Federal Government therefore wishes to appeal to ASUU to consider students who are currently writing degree and promotion examinations, call off the strike and return to the negotiation table, adding that “the Ministry of Labour and Employment will ensure that a time frame will be tied to negotiation this time around.

“Babalakin Committee was ever ready to continue the negotiation, indeed, has all the necessary ingredients for fruitful social dialogue as well as adequate powers to negotiate and make recommendations to the Federal Government”.

President Muhammadu Buhari addressed Nigerians on Monday morning, two days after he returned from London.

The president had been away for medical treatment for 103 days.
Read the text of the president’s full speech below.

My dear citizens, I am very grateful to God and to all Nigerians for their prayers. I am pleased to be back on home soil among my brothers and sisters.

2. In the course of my stay in the United Kingdom, I have been kept in daily touch with events at home. Nigerians are robust and lively in discussing their affairs, but I was distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially in the social media have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation. This is a step too far.

3. In 2003 after I joined partisan politics, the late Chief Emeka Ojukwu came and stayed as my guest in my hometown Daura. Over two days we discussed in great depth till late into the night and analysed the problems of Nigeria. We both came to the conclusion that the country must remain one and united.

4. Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood.

5. Every Nigerian has the right to live and pursue his business anywhere in Nigeria without let or hindrance.

6. I believe the very vast majority of Nigerians share this view.

7. This is not to deny that there are legitimate concerns. Every group has a grievance. But the beauty and attraction of a federation is that it allows different groups to air their grievances and work out a mode of co-existence.

8. The National Assembly and the National Council of State are the legitimate and appropriate bodies for national discourse.

9. The national consensus is that, it is better to live together than to live apart.

10. Furthermore, I am charging the Security Agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax.

11. Terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety.

12. Therefore we are going to reinforce and reinvigorate the fight not only against; elements of Boko Haram which are attempting a new series of attacks on soft targets · kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes, in addition to ethnic violence fuelled by political mischief makers. We shall tackle them all.

13. Finally, dear Nigerians, our collective interest now is to eschew petty differences and come together to face common challenges of; economic security, political evolution and Integration, as well as lasting peace among all Nigerians.

14. I remain resolutely committed to ensuring that these goals are achieved and maintained. I am so glad to be home.

15. Thank you and may God bless our dear Nation.

General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG) Enoch Adeboye, has revealed a short wooden staff that was blessed and handed over to him for miracles by founder of the church, the late Rev Joseph Akindayomi.

Adeboye showed the short wooden staff to RCCG congregants during the 65th annual convention of the church at the Redemption Camp, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

He said that God had instructed the late Rev. Akindayomi to make the short wooden staff to be blessed and to be handed over to him (Adeboye) for prayers and miracles.

Adeboye explained that the staff had been given to him years ago but God ordered that it should be used sparingly.

He used it at the Convention for three special prayers, including a prayer for God to make a way where there is no way. The cleric raised it raise up, mentioned a prayer point and the congregation prayed.

The prayers done, he raised it up again to bless handkerchiefs which the congregation waved with shouts of “Halleluyah, halleluyah!”

Speaking on the theme of the convention ‘Halleluyah’, Adeboye said that Nigerians must stop complaining but praise God in the face of daunting life challenges.

Adeboye said as long as Jesus lives, Nigerians should remain confident of a better tomorrow.

He noted that praising God guarantees victory, success, dominion and abundant supply from heaven.

He said:-

Among every set of people, there are three subsets, comprising those who have lost battles in life, those still engaged in battles, and those who have won battles recently.

“For all three groups, there is need to praise God continuously – the first set for hope and restoration; the second for God to fight their battles; and the third, who should not forget God and go partying because life is full of unending round of battles.

Also speaking, Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel, stressed the importance of praise.

He listed the power of praise as including the invitation of God’s presence and glory, which provides His favour, healing, access to revelation, breakthrough, and fresh oil.

“Even if you have lost something precious, there is need to praise God because you didn’t lose everything,” he advised.

A randy man has found himself in serious trouble after he was caught sexually molesting his daughter.

A 38-year old taxi driver has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court after he was caught sucking the breast of his 13-year-old daughter and inserting his fingers into her v*gina.

According to Adom News, Alfred Boakye was found guilty on the charge of indecent assault at the end of the trial. Prosecuting Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the Court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku that the complainant was a social worker at Adenta Social Welfare.

The Victim is a class six pupil who resides with her father at Ritz in Adenta. Prosecution said the victim had reported that she was brought from Nnoboam in the Ashanti Akyem in the Ashanti Region by her mother to live with her father, the convict.

According to prosecution, for some time now, during weekends, Boakye would order her to undress, lie down, open her legs for him to examine her.

Prosecution said the victim said before Boakye commenced the examination, he sucked her breast and inserted his fingers into her private part. The Prosecutor said the convict sometimes repeated the act as soon as the victim finished bathing and at one time he applied some yellowish ointment into her v*gina.

On June 28, 2015, around 2:00pm, when the victim returned from church service, the accused ordered her to undress so he would examine her. The prosecutor said as soon as the convict attempted to suck her breast she mastered courage and pushed Boakye away and run away from their room.

She later narrated her ordeal to her class teacher and a report was made to the Adenta Social Welfare and later to the Police. At the Police station a medical form was issued to the victim for her to be examined at a hospital, the prosecution said.

Boakye was later on arrested by the Police, prosecution added.

A former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, on Sunday said that the demands by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were unrealistic in light of the current economic situation in Nigeria. Ezekwesili said this while speaking with Sources in Ibadan while reacting to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the union.

The former minster said that lasting solution to the crisis bedevilling the education sector could only be found from strong analysis of the issues raised by ASUU and evidenced based policies.

“Money is not limitless and yet everyone must acknowledge that investment in education is crucial and it is key.

“There are, however, some fundamental reforms that the sector needs in order to ensure that it is not about the size of the funding but about the productivity of the funding.

“You cannot simply express a desire, it must be founded on reality and that means you must know what can be achieved within a given period,” she said.

According to her, a structural and policy change which allows public and private investments should be integrated into the university system.

“If you remember, the ASUU negotiation started in 2007 when I was the Minister of Education and we constituted a government negotiation team, led by the late Gamaliel Onosode,

“Even though that period was short, one of the major issues for me was for us to make sure that we were being evidenced based in the way we were solving the problem,

“We considered issues like the existing model in countries similar to us in emerging economies,’’ she said.

The former minister said the team also considered what could be done by the public and private sectors about university funding among others.

“Those are the kinds of evidence that we had and on the basis of which we hinged our negotiation at that time,

“It was a very short period and then we had to leave and the next government that took over had to continue.

“I do not know the basis of the final agreement they reached with ASUU, but if it was not anchored on analytical evidence, I am not surprised that there has been inability to implement it.”

Ezekwesili urged both the Federal Government and ASUU to return to the negotiating table and work on the basis of analysis and evidence to find lasting solution to the dispute.

Report has it that ASUU on Aug. 14, embarked on an indefinite strike to press home its demands for the implementation of an agreement signed between it and the Federal Government on condition of service.

ASUU is also asking for increased funding of university, autonomy of the institution and academic freedom.

The presidential aircraft that conveyed Mr. Buhari landed at the airport at about 4:35 p.m. to the excitement of all those present at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

A Nigerian expatriate in Qatar became a millionaire for several hours after a bank mistakenly deposited more than QR1.5 million ($411,127.99) into his account recently.

The man, Michael Asemota, had opened an account with a cheque of QR150,200 with an undisclosed commercial bank, where he is the sole signatory of the account.

As he got back home, he received an alert showing that a QR1,502,000 had been credited into his account by mistake instead of QR150,200. Asemota went back to the bank and returned the money.

Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Asemota said,”After opening the account with the bank, I checked my balance to make withdrawals for a supply job and found the huge sum. I was amazed and decided to contact the bank.

I went to see the manager to report the error of QR1,502,000 deposited into my account. After checking for confirmation, the manager gave me a warm handshake in appreciation.”

Asked why he alerted the bank about the error, Asemota said,”I knew the money did not belong to me and shouldn’t be in my account in the first place, so there were no motives and temptations to keep it.”

Download Video: Tottenham Hotspur 1 – 2 Chelsea [Premier League] Highlights 2017/18 – Marcos Alonso’s hit an 88th-minute winner having also stunned Wembley with a brilliant free-kick in Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Tottenham.

Chelsea got their Premier League title defence up and running amid late drama as Marcos Alonso proved to be an unlikely two-goal hero in the 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley.

Last weekend’s shock opening-day loss at home to Burnley – a match where captain Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas were sent off – and the ongoing saga over Diego Costa’s future has cast an unwelcome shadow over Stamford Bridge and sounded unwelcome echoes of the last campaign they entered as champions.

Jose Mourinho paid with his job before Christmas in 2015 as a squad in turmoil hovered improbably over the relegation zone but Antonio Conte’s side allayed doubts over a similar implosion as they turned in a performance of grit and togetherness at the national stadium.

Alonso produced the champagne moment in the 24th minute and a remodelled defence, featuring Andreas Christensen on his first Premier League start, repelled waves of Tottenham attacks with increasing ease until a striker undid their good work.

Michy Batshuayi scored decisively when Chelsea clinched the title at West Brom in May but the Belgium international headed into his own net in the 82nd minute – three minutes after coming on.

It left Alonso to step up thrillingly once more. The wing-back stormed into the Spurs box to catch out Hugo Lloris at the near post two minutes from time, leaving Conte to unfurl trademark touchline delirium.

Forty eight hours after a security breach was recorded at the Zone 7, Abuja, office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), indications have emerged that some high-profile suspects may have masterminded the dawn attack. It will be recalled that some gunmen had, about 5:00am on Wednesday, attacked the 30A, Harper Street, Zone 7, office of the anti-graft agency.

The target of the assailants, according to the EFCC, was one of its top investigators, Mr. Ishaku Sharu, who is the Head of Foreign Exchange Malpractices Fraud Section. Interestingly, Wednesday’s dawn attack came a few weeks after one of the commission’s top investigators, Austin Okwor, escaped death by the whiskers, after a vicious attack in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, left him severely wounded.

The attackers, who were repelled by security operatives guarding the building, according to a statement by the commission’s spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, had dropped a letter containing threat to kill Sharu. As the anti-graft agency begins investigation into the incident, Saturday Telegraph’s investigation has revealed that some high-profile suspects, who are either facing trial, or being investigated on alleged corruption and money laundering cases, may be behind the Wednesday’s attack.

A competent security source, who spoke in confidence with Saturday Telegraph, said Sharu’s “sin” is his refusal to compromise his job. The source further claimed, that the “overwhelming” evidence the top investigator may have gathered around politically- exposed persons (PEPs) undergoing investigation, may have unsettled the affected suspects, whose identity had yet to be ascertained due to ongoing probe. However, it was gathered that the anti-graft agency is narrowing down on some recent cases being investigated by Sharu.

“In this kind of situation, you can’t rule out anything. While we are taking a second look at all the high-profile cases that he had handled in the past; we are also paying special focus on recent ones,” the source said. Apart from PEPs, Sharu also coordinates the investigation of senior retired military officers.

The source said: “Obviously, Ishaku Sharu was their target, because of the sensitive unit he heads, which oversees investigation of some politically exposed individuals under investigation/trial, who have (allegedly) looted public treasury.

“Don’t also forget that he is in charge of investigation of some senior retired military officers, who have questions to answer on the (alleged) procurement fraud in the military. “We are also aware some senior military officers are not happy with the outcome of some investigations he carried out which indicted some retired senior military officers. You know that in military circles, there is esprit de corps. So, the feeling is that some serving senior officers are afraid that a fate similar to the one that befell their retired colleagues may await them.

“They are aware that Sharu cannot be compromised and so the only option is for him to be intimidated. Although he has those working with him, it was deliberate that the death threat note was addressed to him.” Asked if Sharu had received threat messages in the past, the source said: “That is not necessary now.”

Another source, who spoke in similar vein, said a directive had since been issued, for a watertight security around the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, as well as top investigators at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, and zonal offices. It was further gathered that the police high command, might deploy more men to boost existing security arrangements at EFCC.

“I can assure you that security around Acting Chairman and top investigating officers, had been heightened. “I heard that the police high command has also given directive for additional armed personnel to be drafted within and around the commission’s headquarters and other locations, to forestall any eventuality,” he said.

This was as Saturday Telegraph learnt that the threat to life letter packaged in a white envelope, was being subjected to “forensic examination” by experts. Meanwhile, a visit to the zone 7 office that was attacked, showed that armed Mobile policemen, as well as operatives from the anti-bomb unit of the force, were still present, as visitors entering the building were thoroughly searched.

Part of the EFCC’s statement on the dawn attack, had read: “A major security breach was recorded at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the early hours of Wednesday, August 16, 2017, as unknown gunmen attacked the office located at Wuse Zone 7, Abuja.

“The group of heavily armed bandits invaded the office about 05.00 hours and began shooting into the premises, damaging vehicles parked on the premises in the process. However, the attack was repelled by guards on duty.

“The hoodlums escaped in a getaway vehicle but not without leaving a message; a white envelope dropped by the fleeing attackers was found to contain a death threat addressed to Ishaku Sharu, a senior investigator with the Commission…”

In a telephone conversation with Saturday Telegraph yesterday, the commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, neither confirmed nor denied security beef-up around Magu and others. He said: “There is nothing like improving or not improving on security; we have always been conscious of security.”

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that he will be taking a paternity leave of 2 months after the birth of his 2nd child.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will take two months of paternity leave when his wife Priscilla Chan gives birth to their second daughter. Zuckerberg revealed this on Facebook to his numerous followers.

“When Max was born, I took two months of paternity leave. I will always be grateful I could spend so much time with her in the first months of her life.

Our new daughter is coming soon, and I’m planning to take two months of paternity leave again. This time, I’m going to take advantage of Facebook’s option to take leave in parts. I’ll take a month off to be with Priscilla and the girls at the beginning, and then we’ll spend the whole month of December together as well. I’m looking forward to bonding with our new little one and taking Max on adventures.

At Facebook, we offer four months of maternity and paternity leave because studies show that when working parents take time to be with their newborns, it’s good for the entire family. And I’m pretty sure the office will still be standing when I get back.” Zuckerberg wrote.

Zuckerberg did something similar back in 2015, when the couple welcomed their first daughter, Max.

Facebook offers its US employees up to four months of paid parental leave which they can take throughout the year. When Max was born, Zuckerberg took his time all at once; this time, Zuckerberg writes, he’ll take a month off to be with his family immediately following the birth, and then he’ll go on leave again for the entire month of December.
